The Northern Zone of the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Trainees’ Association (GNMTA) has a new leader in its ranks! Anthony Nikin-Laar, the President of Nursing Training College, Wa (NTC, Wa), has emerged victorious as the newly elected Vice President of the Northern Zone GNMTA after a competitive election process.

 

A Historic Victory at the 31st Annual Zonal Congress

The 31st Annual Zonal Congress of the GNMTA Northern Zone took place at the GRNMA Guest House in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, from March 4th to March 9th, 2025. Nursing and midwifery trainees from across the five northern regions gathered for this highly anticipated annual congress, which was packed with activities aimed at fostering leadership, academic excellence, and professional growth.

 

Theme: Fostering Unity and Leadership – Building a Resilient Future for GRNMA through GNMTA

The theme of this year’s congress, “Fostering Unity and Leadership: Building a Resilient Future for GRNMA through GNMTA,” reflects the commitment of the association to promote unity among trainees, encourage leadership development, and strengthen the future of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) through the efforts of the GNMTA.

Throughout the week, several engaging and insightful activities took place, including:

✅ Institutional Report Reading – Schools presented their achievements and challenges.

✅ Vetting of New Executives – Candidates were assessed on their leadership potential.

✅ Manifesto Readings – Contestants outlined their visions for GNMTA’s future.

✅ Inter-School Quiz Competition – A test of knowledge and academic excellence.

✅ Awards Ceremony – Recognizing outstanding students and institutions.

✅ Miss GNMTA Contest – Celebrating beauty, intelligence, and leadership among female trainees.

✅ Grand Durbar – A cultural and social gathering fostering unity among members.

 

The Election Process – A Battle of 26 Contestants from 22 Schools

The competition was intense, with 26 contestants vying for various leadership positions, representing 22 Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges across the Northern Zone. Voting was conducted through ballot papers, with each school having three delegates casting their votes.

A total of 26 student leaders from 22 nursing and midwifery training institutions contested for various positions. However, after thorough scrutiny during the vetting process, some contestants were disqualified, leaving a final set of candidates to proceed with the election.

The Northern Zone comprises all nursing and midwifery schools in Upper West, Upper East, Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions. The election was observed by key representatives, including:

🔹 Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) Upper West & Upper East representatives

🔹 National GNMTA Executives

🔹 Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) representatives

🔹 Former Zonal Executives

After a rigorous selection process, Anthony Nikin-Laar (NTC, Wa) emerged as the new Vice President of GNMTA Northern Zone, a well-earned recognition of his dedication, leadership, and passion for the progress of nursing and midwifery trainees.
